Dearest Wine Club Members,

Happy Spring! We hope that this newsletter finds you all doing well. Here, at Laird Family Estate, we are experiencing another early bud break. The Chardonnay at our home-vineyard, Red Hen Ranch, began to bud the first week of March, which is about three weeks early. As long as temperatures continue to increase as we approach summer and the rain holds off until Fall, we could be expecting another fantastic harvest.

At this time, we would like to offer you a delightful April wine club shipment that includes a few red wines from the notable 2012 and 2013 vintages, as well as a satisfying summertime white. We would also like to remind you that this is the last wine club shipment until October, so for those of you who live in states that tend to get quite hot during summer, you may want to consider taking advantage of this shipment to stock up your wine collection. With that said, here is the line-up for the "Pyramid Preferred Mixed-Level Wine Club" shipment.

2014 Big Ranch Sauvingnon Blanc, Oak Knoll

Retail: $20 / Wine Club: $16

Notes: Situated in the heart of Napa Valley's Oak Knoll Appellation, this lively and prolific varietal thrives nearby on Big Ranch Road, just around the corner from our winery. Crafted in an approachable, fruit-forward style, 100% stainless steel in fermentation showcases our Big Ranch Sauvignon Blanc in its purest expression. Delicate white gold tones introduce a floral bouquet reminiscent of daffodils and jasmine with subtle hints of honeydew melon and passion fruit. This light bodied white wine is dry with notes of elderflower, lemon juice, and white nectarine.

2013 Ghost Ranch Pinot Noir, Carneros

Retail: $45 / Wine Club: $36

Notes: Vineyard workers have long reported seeing people between the rows and down by the creek, people who simply disappear when approached. Hence the name "Ghost Ranch". This Pinot Noir is bright ruby red in appearance and complemented by a pronounced fragrance of rose petals, cherries, and toasted brioche. Light in body with bright acidity, the palate resembles rhubarb and raspberry, while the mid-tones and finish are analogous of prune tree sap and truffle honey.

2012 Suscol Ranch Syrah, Napa

Retail: $45 / Wine Club: $36

Notes: Suscol Ranch is located in a cooler region of Napa that is influenced by the San Pablo Bay. These conditions help create mature flavors and balance in the remarkable Syrah from a very historic property. This wine portrays an inky violet appearance with aromas of maple bacon, blackberry, and a subtle note of stone minerality. The low tannins and acidity make for a smooth mouth-feel that is complemented by flavors of Bing cherry, forest floor, and juicy black plum.

2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Retail: $58 / Wine Club: $46.40

Notes: This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is a duet of our favorite two vineyards: 70% Flat Rock Ranch, our most critically-acclaimed block, for its juicy and vibrant approachability, and 30% Mast Ranch for its earthy, tannic structure. Both single vineyard designates of the Yountville Appellation, these vineyards possess a cross section of geomorphic and micro-climate idiosyncrasies poised to produce a Cabernet Sauvignon of approachable refinement. The deep crimson appearance offers a rich bouquet of ripe strawberry, cranberry, roasted coffee bean, and brown sugar. Leathery tannins are balanced with bright notes of juicy red cherry, fresh tobacco, and tea leaf on the palate. A pleasing finish of cedar and dark fruit lingers.

2012 Phantom Ranch Pinot Noir, Carneros

Retail: $55 / Wine Club: $44

Notes: With our second Phantom Ranch offering, a 50/50 balance of two highly-regarded Pinot Noir clones: Pommard and 115. Hand-selected from our most picturesque vineyard in Carneros, this elegant Pinot Noir was planted specifically for the Laird Family and vinted under the direction of consulting winemaker Paul Hobbs. The enticing red-violet color introduces floral and fruity redolence of dried flowers, pomegranate, hints of cinnamon, followed by a medium body, modest acidity, and complex flavors of strawberry, cherry, unsweetened cocoa, and tea leaf.

2012 Flat Rock Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Retail: $90 / Wine Club: $72

Notes: Our Flat Rock Ranch vineyard is located near the north corner of where Yountville Cross Road meets Silverado Trail, on State Lane. This prized, complex fruit from the Yountville Appellation is a result of unique geological and meteorological conditions: volcanic soils similar to the adjacent Stags Leap District, but also display ancient coastal deposits, and sedimentary and alluvial soils that provide beneficial stress for our vines. With aromas of toasted coconut, vanilla, and dried figs, the palate exhibits a developing wine, full-bodied with subdued tannins. This cellar gem has notes of English walnut, tart boysenberry, cocoa, and an alluring finish of black liquorice.
